South Norfolk's biggest-ever litter pick celebrates community champions

A record 64 groups organised litter picks across the district this year, up from 52 in 2025. Together, 1,446 volunteers dedicated nearly 3,000 hours to cleaning up their local communities, collecting more than 700 bags of litter, equivalent to around five tonnes of waste.

South Norfolk Council's Cabinet Member for the Environment, Cllr Martyn Hooton, said:

This has been a huge community effort and the enthusiasm shown by volunteers across the district has been incredible. Together they have achieved something really special for their communities and the environment."

The five winning groups, chosen at random by Cllr Hooton, were:

• The Stables Pickers

• Little Melton Parish Council

• Wreningham Parish Council

• Hempnall Baby and Toddler Group

• Wymondham High Eco Team

Each group received £500 to spend on projects that will benefit their local community. The remaining 59 participating groups received £50 in recognition of their efforts.

Cllr Hooton said:

Every single group that took part has made a real difference to their local area, helping to keep our towns and villages clean, welcoming and environmentally friendly. Whether they collected one bag or one hundred, every volunteer should be proud of the part they played. Congratulations to our winning groups and thank you to everyone who got involved."

The Big South Norfolk Litter Pick encourages residents, schools, charities, businesses and community organisations to come together and take action in their local area.
