Sharps disposal

Sharps waste disposal – a safe and free disposal service for residents.

If you self-administer injected medication, the best way to dispose of most sharps waste is to take your sharps box to a participating pharmacy in your area.

With the support of participating pharmacies, Norfolk’s local authorities have helped establish a safe and free disposal service for residents producing normal household sharps waste, such as needles used for diabetes and other self-administered medications.

Please note: this pharmacy service is for standard sharps waste only and does not currently include cytotoxic or cytostatic waste (purple-lidded sharps boxes). If you need to dispose of cytotoxic or cytostatic waste, specific disposal instructions are below.

Please check the list below to see which pharmacy near you is offering the sharps disposal service.

This service is free and, with the support of the pharmacies taking part, is provided by the Norfolk Waste Partnership – a partnership of Norfolk’s County, District, Borough and City councils working together to improve waste and recycling services for Norfolk’s residents and visitors.

Broadland also provides a collection every four weeks if you are unable to take them to one of the locations above. Book a sharps collection.

Purple-lidded sharps boxes (cytotoxic or cytostatic waste)

Cytotoxic and cytostatic waste includes needles, syringes, dressings or other healthcare waste contaminated with certain medicines used to treat conditions such as cancer and some autoimmune diseases. These materials require specialist handling and disposal.

If you produce this type of waste at home, please contact us for advice on the most appropriate disposal arrangement. Depending on the circumstances, this may include:

  • collection by the council;
  • disposal via a participating pharmacy or healthcare provider; or
  • another appropriate clinical waste disposal route.

Please do not place cytotoxic or cytostatic waste in your household bins or recycling bins.
