Two Norfolk Councils raise the flag to honour Ukrainian Independence Day

The conflict has displaced nearly six million people with refugees still arriving in the county every week.

Since the Russian invasion 18 months ago, the overwhelmingly generous residents of South Norfolk and Broadland have welcomed over a thousand victims of the war into their homes.

Broadland Council’s Chairwoman Caroline Karimi-Ghovanlou said:

“The outpouring of love and hospitality of our residents has been the only recompense of such a dire situation. Our hearts and prayers are with the families both separated from their loved ones and fighting alongside them.”

The women and children who have arrived in our regions are now established members of our communities, however, the initial two year placements are coming to an end and we are looking for residents willing to offer a home to our guests.

We are running an 8-week roadshow in the market towns of South Norfolk and Broadland commencing Friday 1st of September to chat with residents about potentially opening their homes.

Each household which hosts a family will receive a £500 tax-free payment each month, with no infringement on benefits or single occupancy council tax reductions. Keep an eye on the Councils’ social media for location updates.

South Norfolk Council’s Chairman James Easter said:

“It is now time for us to open our homes once again to the families who have fled this unjust war. Our residents’ support and generosity was astounding at the start of the conflict, and we need your support once again.”
