Thousands of items expected at Hellesdon recycling event

Broadland Council's recycling event in Taverham

Broadland District Council is inviting residents to take part in a Small Electrical and Textile Recycling Event on Friday 10 October 2025, from 10am to 2pm at Hellesdon Community Centre.

This community-focused event offers a convenient way for residents to dispose of unwanted small electrical items and textiles in an environmentally friendly way. Whether it’s old toasters, tangled chargers, worn-out clothes, or faded curtains, the event provides a simple solution to recycle items that often end up being thrown away.

At the Council’s last recycling event in Taverham, nearly 800 electrical items, 26 bags of textiles, and two textile banks were collected and the Council is expecting to collect a similar amount at Hellesdon.

Cllr Jan Davis, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Excellence, said:

We’re committed to helping residents reduce waste and recycle more. Events like this make it easier for people to do the right thing for the environment while clearing out items they no longer need. If we recycled all our old electricals, we would cut as much CO₂ as taking 3.8 million cars off the road. Every small action adds up and can create a big impact."

No booking is required. Residents are encouraged to simply turn up with their items. Please ensure all electricals are small enough to be carried by hand and that textiles are clean and dry.

All of the electrical items collected at the event will be sent to a contractor in Costessey, where they are dismantled and their separate components recycled. A huge 75% of materials in old electrical items can be recycled and turned into new things like life-saving equipment, children’s playgrounds and even new electricals.

All textiles collected are sorted into items that can be reused or recycled. If the clothing or material cannot be reused, it is shredded into fibres ready to make new fabric.

The event will take place at Hellesdon Community Centre, Middletons Lane (entrance on Wood View Road), Hellesdon, NR6 5EG. For more information, visit our recycling events page or follow Broadland District Council on social media.
