Third consultation launched on local Design Code

Share your thoughts

A third round of public consultation has been launched by South Norfolk and Broadland District Councils on the development of a local design code, which will guide future planning applications across both districts.

This follows two earlier phases of engagement, including the initial consultation held over the summer and a second round focused on draft priorities.

This latest consultation invites residents and stakeholders to review the draft Design Code, as well as the draft Broadland Character Assessment and an Assessment Framework that have been prepared to support the code.

Following this consultation, Tibbalds (the consultants leading on this piece of work) will analyse feedback and produce the proposed, final documents for Broadland and South Norfolk District Councils.

There will be a final public six-week consultation period on the document later in 2025 before the Councils adopt the Design Code as a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD).

South Norfolk Councillor Lisa Overton-Neal commented:

We are fortunate to live in such a beautiful part of the Country, and it’s vital we protect what makes South Norfolk special. This design code will help ensure that new developments complement our existing communities.

Broadland District Councillor Martin Booth added:

Broadland’s rich heritage and unique buildings are a source of pride. As we plan for future growth, this design code will help shape homes that reflect our district’s identity.

Design codes serve as clear, visual frameworks that set out specific design requirements. The code for Broadland and South Norfolk, places particular emphasis on high-quality landscaping, the character of local architecture, and the use of distinctive materials.

It will strengthen the design quality and consistency of new residential developments across the districts.

The deadline for feedback on draft policies is 5pm on Monday 23 June.
