Local Government Reorganisation statement from Leader of Broadland District Council
Statement from Councillor Sue Holland.
I am very supportive of the principles of devolution to our localities which should give greater powers to our region and thereby greater advantages to residents, businesses, and communities in Broadland.
However, if Local Government Reorganisation is to take place, I am not supportive of the arbitrary creation of large super-distant unitary councils in county areas such as Norfolk and Suffolk . Our two counties are incredibly diverse, with urban, rural, and coastal areas and a combined population of over 1.67m residents.
I believe a super unitary council model would result in the diminishing of local representation and the loss of localised services. Any proposed reorganisation in the future of local government structures should be inclusive and transparent, ensuring that there is proper consultation and engagement.
Our role as local councils is to work collaboratively to achieve the best for our areas. I am very concerned that the timelines published by Government are too short to ensure that true collaboration is taking place and that proper consideration is being given to decisions being taken.
I would strongly urge my County Council colleagues who are due this week to make a decision which will begin a process for reorganisation in Norfolk, to carefully consider the implications of their decision. Government have stated that areas where there are clear and agreed plans for reorganisation can request that local elections be delayed.
There is no such plan in place for Norfolk. One size does not fit all. We need to ensure that the right evidence is gathered to determine the best approach and model for reorganisation moving forward. Any change needs to keep local government genuinely local, reflecting the needs of residents and businesses, whilst strengthening democratic accountability and representation.
I welcome the opportunity to work closely with my District and County colleagues to deliver the best outcomes for everyone living and working in our communities.
