South Norfolk: Who’s your COVID-19 community hero?
South Norfolk residents are being invited to nominate outstanding individuals who have played a vital role in supporting their local community during the COVID-19 outbreak.
Nominations have been flooding in since the launch of the South Norfolk COVID-19 Community Heroes last month. Residents have been sharing stories of kindness and community spirit across the district to be recognised by the special scheme run by South Norfolk Council.
Cllr Yvonne Bendle, Portfolio Holder for Health, Housing and Wellbeing said:
“It gives me such pride to hear stories of the wonderful work happening in communities across district. "The South Norfolk COVID-19 Communities Hero scheme is designed to recognise the individuals and groups doing so much for those that need it most. If you know of a hero in your community please do let us know.”
Chris and Shelagh Cottrell are two heroes to have already been celebrated by the scheme after being nominated for their work supporting residents in Wymondham.
Despite both shielding from the virus, the pair set up a network of over 180 volunteers, and along with the South Norfolk Help Hub organised deliveries of vital supplies through the Wymondham Doorstep Helpers Facebook group.
The group distributed leaflets around the town to ensure that they reached as many residents that needed help as they possibly could and since lockdown started have made deliveries to 100s of the town’s most vulnerable residents.
Chris also set up the Wymondham Listeners project to help alleviate the loneliness of those self-isolating in the area. Volunteers were on hand to talk to anyone who might need a quick chat or emotional support to help them through the day.
