South Norfolk: Reduce food waste to protect the planet

South Norfolk Council has pledged its support for Food Waste Action Week, which aims to raise awareness of the environmental consequences of wasting food.

Beginning today and running until 7 March, Food Waste Action Week – organised by world-leading sustainability charity WRAP – will shed light on various steps we can all take to make wasting food a thing of the past.

South Norfolk Council is urging residents to follow the advice to reduce the amount of food thrown away in order to protect our planet, and will be sharing tips via its social media channels, such as meal planning, making sure the fridge is on the right setting, and using up leftovers.

According to WRAP, wasted food contributes 8 to 10% of total manmade greenhouse gas emissions and roughly one third of food produced around the world is wasted.

Cllr Michael Edney, South Norfolk Council’s Portfolio Holder for Clean and Safe Environment, said:

“The team at South Norfolk Council is excited to support this initiative and we pledge to raise awareness of food waste and its impact on the environment. The Food Action Week campaign will help raise awareness about the impact of food waste and encourage our residents to work together to eradicate the issue.”

South Norfolk Chairman Graham Minshull commented:

“South Norfolk Council is committed to helping prevent food waste – both through our own operations and through supporting and educating our residents to reduce food waste at home. We actively support the aims of Food Waste Action Week 2021 and welcome the drive for increasing awareness around the impact of food waste on the global climate.”
