South Norfolk Member ward fund used to buy river testing kit

A nature group in Wymondham has secured funding from South Norfolk Council’s Member Ward fund to purchase a river testing kit.
Greening Wymondham approached South Wymondham councillor Suzanne Nuri-Nixon to ask for funding as they have been testing local river samples for over a year and are working with the UEA to submit their findings.
The specialised testing kit involves a type of oven for petri films, which can record levels of bacteria and other substances in the water, as well as syringes and collection bottles.
Cllr Nuri-Nixon said:
“The new kit I've helped Greening Wymondham acquire is a big step forward. They have been testing the Tiffey for a year, largely focusing on the things that affect plants and wildlife such as nitrates and phosphates. The group is currently testing for E.coli which directly impacts everyone who uses the river.”
Jay Andrews from Greening Wymondham said they can advise on the water’s safety and on precautions that might need to be taken.
“As more tests are done, we can also help narrow down areas where drains, ditches or pumping stations need attention. We're working on the best ways to make the information swiftly and easily available to the public.”
