South Norfolk Council is pleased to confirm that construction will soon begin on a long-anticipated signal-controlled pedestrian and cycle crossing at William Frost Way, Costessey.

The scheme, which also includes footway widening and other safety enhancements, will significantly improve facilities for pedestrians and cyclists in the Longwater area. The works are being delivered by Persimmon Homes Anglia and Aldi, under legal agreements secured by South Norfolk Council as part of planning permissions for new housing in Easton and the Aldi store at Longwater.

The scheme has been approved by Norfolk County Council and is scheduled to commence on Monday, 7 July 2025, with completion expected in approximately nine weeks.

South Norfolk Cabinet Member for Planning and Economic Growth, Cllr Lisa Overton-Neal, said:

We are delighted that work will soon be underway and that our hard work and perseverance at getting this vital safety measure in place has finally paid off. Well done to all the officers involved. This is a positive step forward for the Longwater community, delivering safer, more accessible routes for everyone.

These works will replace temporary barriers that were installed due to earlier delays in delivery.

Traffic management measures will be in place to ensure the safety of workers and maintain access for emergency vehicles.

Advance signage will inform road users of diversions and changes to traffic flow. Bus access from Redpoll Road will be maintained throughout the works. However, there will be periods when bus stops on William Frost Way are temporarily suspended. Alternative stops will be available on Alex Moorhouse Way.

The Council encourages residents and commuters to plan ahead and follow posted signage during the construction period.
