New pilot helps residents take control of type 2 diabetes

A pioneering new health programme is launching this autumn to help adults living with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes, funded by the South Norfolk Health and Wellbeing Partnership, which is led by South Norfolk Council.

The Tide Turners Project aims to improve people's health through evidence-based nutrition, supported exercise and peer support. Bringing together leading expertise in nutrition and physical activity, the programme will help participants take positive steps towards managing their condition and improving their wellbeing.

Councillor Kim Carsok, Chair of the South Norfolk Health and Wellbeing Partnership and South Norfolk Council's Cabinet Member for Health and Leisure, said:

We know that living with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes can be challenging, but the right support can make a real difference. This innovative pilot will give people access to expert guidance, practical tools and encouragement to make sustainable lifestyle changes that can improve their health and quality of life. By bringing together nutrition, exercise and peer support, we're helping residents take greater control of their wellbeing."

From 3 August, participating GP practices can begin referring eligible adult patients to the programme that will start in September. The pilot is open to eligible adults with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes who are able to attend sessions at either Wymondham Leisure Centre or Long Stratton Leisure Centre.

Residents interested in taking part are encouraged to speak to their GP or healthcare professional about the programme during their next routine review or appointment. The Lifestyle Club (TLC) will deliver an eight-week online nutrition and lifestyle programme based on the pioneering work of Dr David Unwin.

The course focuses on sustainable dietary and lifestyle changes and has helped many people with type 2 diabetes improve their blood glucose control. Alongside this, participants will take part in a 12-week supported exercise programme at either Wymondham Leisure Centre or Long Stratton Leisure Centre.

The programme will use state-of-the-art EGYM technology, which creates personalised exercise plans and enables participants to track and celebrate their progress throughout their journey.

Councillor Carsok added: "The Tide Turners Project aims to empower people with the knowledge, confidence and support needed to make lasting lifestyle changes that benefit both their physical and mental wellbeing."

The South Norfolk Health and Wellbeing Partnership brings together NHS organisations, Norfolk County Council services, voluntary and community groups, Norfolk Police and other partners to improve health and wellbeing and tackle health inequalities across the district. Since its formation in 2022, the partnership has supported a range of initiatives designed to improve health outcomes for South Norfolk residents.

For more information, residents should speak to their GP or healthcare professional at their next routine appointment or review.
