New mural celebrating Wymondham's heritage unveiled in town centre

The eye-catching artwork was officially unveiled on 14 September by South Norfolk Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning and Economic Growth, Cllr Lisa Overton-Neal at Wymondham's historic fire arch, the former entrance and exit to the town's fire station.

The mural forms part of a programme of public realm improvements, jointly funded by South Norfolk Council and Wymondham Town Council, to enhance the town centre and encourage more visitors to explore local businesses and attractions.

Cllr Lisa Overton-Neal said:

It was a pleasure to officially unveil this fantastic mural and see the finished artwork brought to life. It brings together many of the landmarks, stories and features that make Wymondham such a special place.

“The project forms part of our ongoing commitment to creating vibrant places, strengthening local economies and making our market towns attractive destinations for residents and visitors."

While larger improvement projects continue to be developed, the mural has been delivered to maintain momentum and help boost footfall and economic activity in the town. Local artist Julia Allum was commissioned to create the vibrant artwork, which incorporates 22 local features, including the historic fire arch.

Work began in August, with Julia spending around three weeks preparing the wall, sketching the design and carefully painting each element by hand. Throughout the process, residents and shoppers regularly stopped to watch the mural take shape. Now complete, the mural provides a colourful new attraction for Wymondham.

Visitors are encouraged to see how many of the 22 landmarks and features they can spot within the design before exploring the town to discover them in person, supporting local shops, businesses and attractions along the way.
