New food waste collections to roll out across South Norfolk

A new free weekly food waste collection service will begin rolling out across South Norfolk next month, helping households cut waste and play their part in creating a greener future.
This marks an important step forward in how South Norfolk Council manages waste across the district, giving residents a simple and effective way to reduce what goes into their rubbish bins while helping the Council recover more valuable resources.
The new service will be introduced in two phases:
- Phase 1: Collections will start week commencing 27 July 2026
- Phase 2: Collections will start week commencing 28 September 2026
Not all households will begin at the same time. Residents can check which phase they are in and find their collection start date using the postcode checker.
In the run-up to the launch, households will receive everything they need to get started. A leaflet confirming collection start dates will be delivered in advance of the service beginning, followed by the delivery of kitchen caddies, outdoor bins and liners approximately one to three weeks before collections start.
Each household will receive:
- A small indoor kitchen caddy
- A 23-litre outdoor food waste bin
- Liners to keep the caddy clean
Using the service is simple. Residents can place food waste such as peelings, leftovers and out-of-date food into their kitchen caddy, then transfer it to the outdoor food bin for collection. Collections will take place weekly, on the same day as rubbish and recycling collections, by a separate vehicle.
Collected food waste will be processed to generate energy and produce nutrient-rich fertiliser, supporting both the environment and local communities.
