Local councils help residents save on energy bills

With energy prices set to soar, two local councils are offering help to residents struggling to heat their homes.

The Norfolk Warm Homes Partnership, led by Broadland District and South Norfolk Councils, is providing heating and insulation grants to help people keep warm this winter. This programme is funded by the Government’s Sustainable Warmth scheme.

South Norfolk Council’s Cabinet Member for Better Lives, Cllr Alison Thomas, said:

“With energy prices set to reach an all-time high, it’s more important than ever to ensure that your home is properly heated and well insulated. Insulation keeps the heat in and the cold out, which cuts down on energy use, reduces your bills and also helps the environment.”

Broadland District Councillor’s Portfolio Holder for Housing and Wellbeing, Cllr Fran Whymark, said:

“We don’t want anyone to be cold this winter, if you are struggling to keep warm, please contact us and we may be able to help.”

A range of measures are available to residents struggling to heat their homes with an EPC rating of E, F or G and where the total household income is £30,000 or less.

Landlords can also apply for grants to contribute to their property upgrades to help their low-income tenants save energy and money. They will only be required to contribute at least one third of the cost for rental properties.

Insulation measures including loft and cavity wall/external wall insulation are available under this scheme. Residents who are not currently on the mains gas network and are using an expensive or inefficient source of heating could be eligible for a grant for a low carbon air source heat pump.

The councils also provide essential assistance to vulnerable residents struggling to heat their homes, including benefit checks and energy efficiency advice.
