Discover South Norfolk’s hidden heritage

South Norfolk’s past will come alive this September as part of England’s largest festival of history and culture. Heritage Open Days, supported by South Norfolk Council, runs from 12 to 21 September 2025 and offers residents and visitors the chance to explore the area’s rich history through a wide range of free activities, exhibitions and guided tours.
South Norfolk Council’s Chairwoman, Cllr Deborah Sacks, said:
Heritage Open Days are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the rich history and vibrant culture of South Norfolk. It’s wonderful to see so many local groups, venues and volunteers getting involved. From hands-on workshops to fascinating tours, there’s something for everyone to enjoy – and it’s all free. We encourage residents and visitors alike to take part and discover the stories that make our communities so special.”
From Victorian railways to Anglo-Saxon camps, historic churches, and creative workshops, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Highlights in South Norfolk include:
- Behind the Scenes at The Corn Hall, Diss – Take a guided tour of this historic venue and uncover its hidden stories
- Build a Mini Town at Harleston Library – A family-friendly papercraft activity where visitors help create a miniature town that evolves throughout the festival
- Celebrate Heritage Crafts at designermakers21, Diss – Watch live demonstrations of traditional crafts like brush making and lithographic printing in a former ironmongers
- Meet the Anglo-Saxons at Winfarthing – Experience life in a mini Anglo-Saxon camp with living historians
- Explore Nature’s Architects at Brockdish Common – A hands-on event celebrating wildlife homes with practical activities and displays
- Self-guided tours around Wheatfen nature reserve – Enjoy a visit to this magical wetland.
- Discover the History of Railways at Wymondham Abbey Station – View historical memorabilia and enjoy talks on the region’s railway heritage
- Secrets in the Stones Tour, Harleston – Decode the town’s built environment and uncover its architectural secrets.
Many events are drop-in, requiring no booking, while others may need pre-registration due to limited capacity. Whether you're interested in architecture, nature, poetry, or hands-on crafts, Heritage Open Days in South Norfolk promises a unique opportunity to celebrate local stories, people, and places.
