Delay to planned discussion for future of South Norfolk House

South Norfolk Council has had to delay its plans to discuss the future of its former headquarters, South Norfolk House, which was originally scheduled for the Council meeting on Monday, 27 July, 2023.
This delay follows an application for South Norfolk House to be recognised as an Asset of Community Value. The site, vacated by South Norfolk Council in October 2022, was initially set for sale in April, but already experienced a delay to allow for the development of a community proposal.
The submission of an application for registration as an asset of community value now needs to be considered. If the application is successful, the community bidders would then be granted a further six months to present a funded bid to purchase the property. Any such bid would need to be evaluated alongside any commercial bids.
Regrettably, over the past few months, the site has been subjected to minor vandalism and antisocial behaviour. In response, regular checks are being carried out on the site, and overnight security has been increased.
Councillor Fuller, Leader of South Norfolk Council, said:
"It is our duty to secure the best value for the taxpayer, a principle demonstrated in our recent move to the Horizon Centre. Our new home is not only 84% more energy efficient, but it also results in an annual saving of £750,000 for our taxpayers. This saving can be reinvested into improving services. "South Norfolk House is an asset that belongs to all the taxpayers in South Norfolk, and the Council will do everything possible to ensure that it attains the best value for residents by maximising the return it can generate from the site. However, we must remember that the return is not just a financial consideration. The Council also needs to take into account community value and how it can enhance the quality of life of local residents. "We hope to move swiftly towards the sale of the site, as it is in nobody's interest to leave the building standing empty, incurring ongoing costs of maintenance and security. This careful review of the application is a reflection of our commitment to the residents of South Norfolk. We always maintain a laser focus on delivering the best value for taxpayers while balancing our duty to foster a vibrant and inclusive community."
