Councils recognised for crucial work

Cllr Natasha Harpley with the Housing Team

The Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance (DAHA) has awarded Broadland District and South Norfolk Councils Gold Accreditation for their exceptional domestic abuse support.

In the report from DAHA the councils were praised for their outstanding commitment and innovative approach to supporting survivors of domestic abuse, particularly in critical housing and homelessness assistance. They were also commended for establishing an exemplar network that is making a difference in the lives of vulnerable individuals and families across Norfolk.

Cllr Natasha Harpley, portfolio holder for Communities and Housing said:

It’s absolutely crucial to have a robust support network in place for anyone who is experiencing domestic abuse. I am so proud of this council’s cross-service approach, that ensures fast, efficient and empathetic support for those who are going through a very challenging and traumatic period of their lives.

DAHA specifically highlighted how the councils streamline the often-complex homelessness process, making it remarkably easy to navigate for both survivors and the professionals assisting them.

Cllr Graham Minshull, portfolio holder for supporting people said:

It’s critical people get help when they need it and a strong multi-service approach is making the process as easy as possible for our residents. I am incredibly proud of the Council for achieving such a high standard from the Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance and believe this is a merit to the organisation and to South Norfolk.

DAHA was impressed by the strong collaboration between the councils’ Housing Team and the Help Hub which ensures survivors receive comprehensive support, unconstrained by the limitations of individual team roles.

The councils were also praised for their investment in staff training, with staff demonstrating a keen awareness of how to effectively engage with survivors, acknowledging the profound impact previous experiences and trauma can have on building trust and relationships with professionals.

Cllr Harpley added: “Our proactive and empathetic framework provides a lifeline for survivors, ensuring they receive not just immediate assistance but also sustained, holistic support as they rebuild their lives.”
