Council proudly supports National Cadets Week and the armed forces community

South Norfolk Council is proud to support the Armed Forces community and has helped celebrate the first National Cadets Week, that took place from 5 to 11 October 2026
National Cadets Week brought together cadet forces from across the UK to inspire, recruit and celebrate the life-changing opportunities available through the cadet movement. The week shone a spotlight on the dedication of cadets and adult volunteers, while showcasing the valuable contribution they make to communities across the country.
Around 137,000 cadets and 28,000 adult volunteers are involved in the UK's five Ministry of Defence-sponsored cadet forces. South Norfolk Council is a proud signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant and remains committed to supporting serving personnel, veterans, reservists, cadets and military families. This commitment recognises the important role the Armed Forces community plays in local life and ensures that those who serve, or have served, are treated fairly and with respect.
Throughout National Cadets Week, cadet units across the country opened their doors, shared their stories and demonstrated the skills, experiences and opportunities they provide. Each day will focused on a different theme, including community action, volunteer recognition, lifesaving first aid skills and open days for local residents.
South Norfolk Council’s Chair, Kathryn Cross, said:
National Cadets Week has been a fantastic opportunity to recognise the enormous contribution that cadets and adult volunteers make to our communities.
"The cadet movement helps young people develop confidence, leadership skills, resilience and a strong sense of service. These are qualities that benefit not only the individuals involved but also the wider community.
"As a council that is committed to supporting the Armed Forces community, we are proud to have celebrated National Cadets Week and thank the volunteers who give their time to inspire and guide the next generation."
The council is also encouraging residents to learn more about their local cadet units and the opportunities available for young people and volunteers. National Cadets Week highlights the positive impact of cadet forces in communities throughout the UK, from volunteering and community projects to developing vital lifesaving skills and supporting personal development.
It is an opportunity to celebrate the friendships, experiences and achievements that make the cadet movement such an important part of community life.
