Two local councils have already helped seven young people find permanent employment through the Government’s Kickstart scheme.

Broadland District and South Norfolk Council worked with local businesses acting as a gateway provider for the scheme to find 42 placements for 16 to 24-year-olds across the districts in all areas of work.

So far eight people have completed their placements, with seven of them finding immediate employment, including Kirstyn O’Shea, who completed a six month placement with Broadland District and South Norfolk Council as a Creative Design Apprentice and now has a job as a Design Executive.

She said:

“I had an amazing experience working for Broadland District and South Norfolk Council, and it has been a massive help furthering my career. It was fantastic to gain experience in a professional environment with a great team. After University I struggled finding work without having experience, this placement gave me the ability to further my profession, gain confidence and helped me develop the key skills I needed to progress.”

Broadland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, Cllr Jo Copplestone, said:

“The scheme is really helping our young people to gain the skills, experience and confidence to take that first step on the career ladder and we are grateful to all the businesses that have worked with us to offer placements and give these young people the chance they deserve.”

The scheme has been fully funded by the government, with the councils offering employability skills training, including advice on applying for jobs and attending interviews.

South Norfolk Council’s Cabinet Member for Stronger Economy, Councillor Lisa Neal, said:

“This scheme has really benefitted our local businesses as well as our young people, as the kickstarters can offer a fresh perspective and bring renewed energy and enthusiasm to an organisation. We are delighted that we have been able to help fill employment gaps and kickstart careers.”
