Council expands recycling events with toy collection

For the first time, South Norfolk Council will be collecting toys as part of a reuse and recycling event taking place on Thursday 22 January at The Costessey Centre on Longwater Lane.
Cllr Martyn Hooton, South Norfolk Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said:
The New Year is the perfect time to take stock of what we really need. This event is particularly exciting as it’s the first time South Norfolk Council has collected toys for reuse, giving families an easy and sustainable way to pass them on. By reusing unwanted Christmas gifts or recycling old electricals replaced over the festive period, residents can reduce waste, support good causes and help the environment.
In addition to preloved toys, residents will also be able to drop off small electrical goods such as kettles, lamps and toasters, as well as textiles including clothing and shoes, books and toys. Items dropped off on the day in working order will be safety checked and offered for reuse during the event or donated to charity if not taken. Items unable to be reused will be sent for recycling and turned into something useful.
The event will run from 10am to 2pm for dropping off unwanted items, with residents able to browse and take preloved items from 12pm until 2pm. All items are free to take, with optional donations welcomed.
Any money raised will support Council Chairwoman Cllr Deborah Sacks’s chosen charity, the Ted Ellis Trust based at Wheatfen Nature Reserve. Items remaining at the end of the event will be donated to Big C, ensuring nothing goes to waste. Residents are advised to check which items can be accepted before attending.
