Council calls on businesses to fly the flag for VJ Day

Union Flag flying outside Horizon Building

South Norfolk Council is inviting local businesses and community groups to take part in a district-wide tribute to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, the day that signalled the end of World War II and the conclusion of global hostilities.

As part of the commemorations, the Council is distributing Union Flags to businesses and parish councils across the district, encouraging them to raise their flags by 15 August, the official date of VJ Day.

The aim is to see 80 flags flying, one for each year since the end of the war, as a powerful symbol of remembrance and unity.

Leader of South Norfolk Council, Councillor Daniel Elmer, said:

As we approach this significant anniversary, it is more important than ever to reflect on the sacrifices made for our freedom. Flying the Union Flag across South Norfolk is a way to honour those who served, those who supported them at home and the enduring values of unity and resilience that this symbol represents.

The initiative has already launched, with flags now flying outside Council buildings. Local businesses and parish councils are encouraged to come forward and take part and show collective pride and remembrance as a community.
