Consultation opens on Draft Custom and Self-Build Housing Guidance for Broadland and South Norfolk

People wearing hard hats planning a building project

Broadland District Council and South Norfolk Councils are inviting residents, prospective homeowners, developers, and landowners to share their feedback on a draft Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) that provides guidance for custom and self-build housing projects.

The draft Custom and Self-Build Housing SPD aims to support people interested in building their own homes within the two districts. It offers background information on the custom and self-build process, explains the implementation of relevant policies within the adopted Greater Norwich Local Plan, and highlights key considerations for planning applications.

Crucially, the document addresses Policy 7.5, which allows for self-build and custom-build proposals in the countryside, even where standard residential development might not be permitted.

This six-week public consultation period, running from 10 February 3rd to 21 March, offers an opportunity for residents to shape how the councils implement this important policy. Feedback received will be carefully considered and used to refine the final SPD document.

Interested parties are encouraged to read the draft document and submit their comments by 21 March. Details on how to submit feedback can be found on the council websites and within the draft SPD document itself.

The draft SPD is available online.

Paper copies will also be available for viewing at local libraries in both Broadland and South Norfolk and the Millenium library in Norwich
