Construction of new leisure centre set to start

Work begins at Diss Leisure Centre

Exciting plans for a brand-new community and leisure centre in Diss have taken a major step forward with the project receiving full planning consent, meaning that construction work can now begin.

The new centre is being built on the former John Grose site, just south of Diss Mere, and will provide modern fitness facilities alongside a multi-use community room, soft play and a café. An outdoor plaza and seating will also make the most of views across the Mere.

The development represents the next phase of the Council’s investment in leisure facilities in Diss and its commitment to improving the lives of residents.

Cabinet Member Kim Carsok said:

This is a hugely exciting project for Diss and demonstrates our commitment to investing in the health and wellbeing of our residents.

“For many years people have asked for improved leisure facilities in the town, and that is what we are now delivering. This will be much more than a gym. We want to create a welcoming and inclusive place where people of all ages can exercise, meet friends, enjoy a coffee, take part in activities and feel part of their community.

“Together with our investment in the Swim Centre, the new facility will give Diss modern leisure facilities that the town can be proud of for many years to come.”

The plans have been shaped by extensive community feedback. Hundreds of local people participated in the Council’s consultation, with 75% agreeing that soft play would benefit Diss, more than 80% welcoming a café and 65% saying they would use fitness classes if offered. Residents also asked for e-gym equipment and space that could be hired for community activities. The new centre also has the potential to play a wider role in the town. Development of the former John Grose site will create a stronger link between the town centre and Park Road, generate additional footfall and open up opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy the setting beside the Mere.

Local District Councillor, Graham Minshull said:

“For years residents have been asking when Diss would benefit from the kind of investment we have made in leisure facilities elsewhere in South Norfolk. The answer is now.

“I would like to thank Diss Town Council for its support for the project, this is a significant investment in Diss and, most importantly, it responds directly to what local people have told us they want. It will create a fantastic community facility in a wonderful location and give residents even more opportunities to stay active, healthy and connected.”

The new centre forms part of a multi-phase approach to improving leisure provision in Diss. The first phase saw the existing leisure centre transformed into a dedicated Swim Centre following an investment of nearly £4 million. Improvements included changes to the pool and the changing facilities, while air-source heat pumps, insulation and solar panels were installed with support from £1.2 million of Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme funding. The gym is now being relocated to the new development, supported by a grant of more than £1 million from the Greater Norwich Growth Board.
