Broadland: Volunteers spring into action in Taverham

This week, Broadland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environmental Excellence, Cllr Judy Leggett, joined volunteers from the Norwich Fringe Project at Spring Plantation in Taverham.

The 12 volunteers were busy at the Council-owned site planting 500 whips to improve the woodland under canopy to encourage a greater diversity of fauna and flora.

Cllr Leggett said:

“It was brilliant to meet the volunteers and to see the excellent work of the Norwich Fringe Project. This is just one of the woodland areas that they help us to maintain, and we are really appreciative of their efforts.” “These young trees will help us to fulfil our pledge to plant one tree for every resident in the district, just one step that we are taking to help tackle climate change and make council activities carbon neutral well ahead of the government’s 2050 target.”

The Council are also offering grants of up to £500 to town and parish councils, school groups, community groups and registered charities to plant trees within the district. The Community Tree Planting initiative will help to improve public outdoor spaces for people and nature.

Cllr Leggett added:

“This is a great opportunity to make a really positive and lasting difference to your community.”

The funding can also be used to take part in The Queen’s Green Canopy project, which celebrates the Queen’s jubilee.
