Broadland District Council launched its Community at Heart lottery this week, hosting a virtual launch event that enabled local good causes to learn how to take part in a new weekly community lottery.

The Community at Heart lottery gives Broadland based organisations a new and fun way to raise much needed funds. Each ticket costs £1, with 50% going to a nominated good cause and 10% to a community funding pot, which will be managed by Broadland District Council. The remaining 40% will go towards prize money and running costs.

Players have a 50 to one chance of winning one of the prizes, which range from the £25,000 jackpot to three free tickets.

The first of several local groups to sign up to benefit from the lottery is Taverham Band. Ian Colman MBE, the band's Musical Director & Producer, said: "We were keen to support the lottery not only for the benefits it can bring to Taverham Band but also for the benefit it will bring to Broadland."

There is still time for good causes in Broadland to apply to be part of the lottery, ahead of the first draw on 27 February 2021, and anyone wanting to register their organisation can do so on the lottery website.

The lottery website is also where players can buy tickets, available from 12 January 2021.

"This launch is really exciting because it's all about charities, the voluntary sector and not-for-profit organisations, and trying to support Broadland’s community. For small charities, getting this money is going to make a lot of difference, and will go a long way," said Cllr Trudy Mancini-Boyle, Deputy Leader of Broadland District Council. "We'd encourage other local good causes to sign up. All you have to do is commit to spreading the word about your own lottery page and reaching a minimum of at least 20 ticket sales," she added.

Cllr Karen Vincent, Broadland District Council Chairman, commented:

“Taking part in the lottery will make such a difference to the many good causes across Broadland who are working to support their communities.”

Lottery management company Gatherwell run the scheme, having already launched similar lotteries elsewhere. Gatherwell Managing Director Ben Speare said: "We are delighted that Gatherwell has been awarded the opportunity to run the new Community at Heart Lottery. We're looking forward to helping support Broadland’s local causes in partnership with Broadland District Council.”
