A more ambitious deal for Norfolk

Cllr Sue Holland, Leader of Broadland District Council

A statement from Councillor Sue Holland, Leader of Broadland District Council.

It is unsurprising that there has been an announcement that the Norfolk County devolution deal has been halted, as it is clear that it did not fulfil the requirements expressed by the new government.

I have been open in my concerns that a closed County deal was neither ambitious enough nor had the right governance structures in place. Equally, the new government has been very clear on the need of a wider geography if Norfolk is to play a full part in the proposed English devolution.

I welcome the opportunity for us to work closely with government and our neighbours to deliver a truly ambitious deal for Norfolk which includes all our councils being able to play an equal part as we seek to secure the very best outcomes and opportunities for our residents and businesses.

District councils in Norfolk hold levers which are essential in creating jobs, addressing housing and transport needs, improving economic opportunity and stability, skills shortages, tackling inequalities and reviving local pride – precisely the outcomes at the heart of a good devolution deal.

The very essence of local government is that it exists, both democratically and geographically, to be close to people and communities. In areas with differing local needs and requirements it is essential for residents to be able to engage effectively with their local representatives and have confidence they can influence decisions that directly impact their lives.

I believe that the best way of achieving that goal is to deliver a more collaborative model across the region. We must build upon the successful partnership working across all local authority partners and bring together those critical levers for delivery.

Here in Broadland, we welcome the opportunity to work with our neighbours to achieve that more ambitious deal.
