South Norfolk Council is proud to announce a district-wide initiative to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, a day that marks the definitive end of World War ll and the end of all hostilities.

As a poignant symbol of unity and remembrance, the Union Flag will fly proudly outside all South Norfolk Council buildings. Extending this tribute throughout the district, the Council will also be giving Union Flags to local businesses and parish councils.

The aim is to have 80 flags flying across South Norfolk, each one representing a year since the end of the global conflict.

South Norfolk Council Leader, Daniel Elmer said:

As we approach the 80th anniversary of the end of World War ll, it is more important than ever to remember the sacrifices made for our freedom by so many people. By flying the Union Flag across South Norfolk, we not only honour those who served and those who supported them at home, but we also reaffirm the values of unity and resilience that this iconic symbol represents.

The 80 flags are a tribute to the brave individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice, and to also remember the millions who tirelessly sustained the nation, ensuring a home awaited the returning soldiers, sailors and airmen.

The Union Flag, which flew high during those challenging years, epitomized the unwavering pride and resolute determination of the British people who stood strong in the face of overwhelming odds for so long. It was also a powerful symbol of the unity displayed by people from across the Commonwealth, who came together to support Great Britain in its time of need.
