Ask for Angela
Our councils’ Licensing Team would strongly encourage business owners of our licensed premises and designated premises supervisors to consider adopting the ‘Ask for Angela’ voluntary scheme, as an additional safeguard to help anyone who is feeling vulnerable on a night out to get the support they need.
As licensees of hospitality venues across Broadland and South Norfolk, you and your staff might be able to make the difference between someone getting home safe or being left at risk. We would encourage you to take a look at the Ask for Angela website, together with the support and resources that are available for venues such as yours.
In a recent press BBC article, a spokesperson for the Home Office commented:
"Our mission is to halve violence against women and girls in a decade and we have introduced a range of measures to make progress towards that goal, including new action to tackle the spiking of drinks, and to protect victims of stalking.
"We welcome the work of schemes like Ask for Angela in helping venues and businesses to support vulnerable women, and while this scheme is independent of government we strongly share its objectives to ensure that women feel safe in all areas of their lives, including when enjoying a night out.”
Free Training
Locally, the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Norfolk (OPCCN) is partnering with the Suzy Lamplugh Trust to drive awareness of harassment and upskilling and empowering bystanders across various settings in Norfolk. We would like to ask for your support, as an employer in Norfolk to arrange for as many of your staff to attend this free and impactful training as possible.
Following a growing national conversation around what the public can do to increase women’s safety, people and organisations want to take steps to be able to address the prevalence of unwanted and aggressive behaviours such as harassment that underly the broader cycle of violence against women and girls.
To accommodate public demand, the Suzy Lamplugh Trust and L’Oréal Paris formed a partnership to bring the expert approved international "Stand Up Against Street Harassment" training programme to UK audiences.
The programme is free of charge as it is sponsored by L’Oréal Paris, driving awareness of harassment, as well as upskilling and empowering bystanders across various settings such as public transport, educational institutions, festivals, public spaces, and workplaces, to help defuse situations, discourage harassers, and support victims. This is a global programme, and over 2.2M people have been trained worldwide to date. You can get a glimpse of what this is all about here.
