Gypsy and Traveller Guidance

A temporary stopping place (transit site) is a managed site where Travellers can stop for a short space of time to visit the community.

In South Norfolk, we have our own temporary stopping place which has 6 electrical hook up points, fresh water tap, cassette toilet disposal, portaloo and domestic waste collections. We take pride in managing this site to make it safe for our temporary occupants to enjoy whilst visiting the area and the community. The maximum a family can stay on our site is 6 weeks per year.

How to book South Norfolk Transit Site

Please call 01508 533933 and select option 5. Our Help Hub will take details from you for the purpose of accessing the site, and an officer will make contact with you to discuss your booking. You cannot turn up to the site without booking a pitch in advance. The site has CCTV and a barrier system which is operated by ANPR and requires the occupants vehicle registration numbers.

Unauthorised encampments

An unauthorised encampment is where any person camps on land they do not own. The owner of the land, whether a public body or private individual is responsible for taking action to remove the encampment. If you are a private landowner, the responsibility to remove the occupants will fall to you. You can download guidance for dealing with unauthorised encampments.

Unauthorised developments

An unauthorised development is where a person has developed an area of land they own for residential use without planning permission. Long term encampments by Gypsies, Roma and Travellers or people using caravans to live in on land without planning permission can fall into this category.
