Disrepair

If there is disrepair with the property that is affecting your health or safety, then you should contact your landlord and tell them what needs to be repaired in the property. You should do this in writing, in case you need to prove later that the landlord was made aware of the problem.

sample letter is available to download to help you with this.

If you contact your landlord and the issue is not resolved or becomes an ongoing issue, your local Council may be able to help further. Please be aware you need to have already contacted your landlord before we will be able to help further.

Housing property inspections

The Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) allows local authorities to monitor housing standards. When the Council inspects a home, we will carry out a risk-based assessment and consider the effect of any potential hazards in the property. No home is fully "risk free" and all have potential hazards (stairs, electrical outlets etc). A hazard is considered where there may be any risk of harm to the health or safety of a tenant that could be easily prevented. Some hazards are gradual in their effect, like damp and mould growth, whilst others are quick, such as falls on stairs or burns.
