Food Hygiene Rating Scheme

The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme is a joint Food Standards Agency and local authority initiative where you can find information about standards of food hygiene in catering premises such as restaurants, shops, bars, cafés, schools, hospitals and shops across out the country.

There are over 2200 food businesses within Broadland and South Norfolk, customers can look up the rating given to a food business.

For those that are eligible, a food hygiene rating is provided at the end of a food safety inspection. Scores are awarded in line with the Food Standards Agency Food Hygiene Rating Scheme Brand Standard for:

  • compliance in hygienic practices during the storage and preparation of food
  • structural compliance and
  • confidence in the management of food safety

Premises are not rated against service provided to customers or the quality of the food they produce.

The Food Standard Agency self-assessment food safety checklist can help food business operators achieve or maintain a good food hygiene rating.

If you operate a food business and do not agree with the food hygiene rating you can make an appeal or request a revisit.

If you have improved standards since your inspection you have a right to reply so you can explain this to potential customers who look up your rating online.

Appeal a rating, submit a right-to-reply or request a revisit

The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme business safeguards are explained here and further information regarding safeguards for businesses can be found on the Food Standards Agency's website.
