Food alerts and allergy alerts

If you have a food allergy or intolerance, or you buy or prepare food for someone else who has an allergy or intolerance, food businesses must be able to provide accurate information about the ingredients in their food. This must be on the label of prepacked food or can be provided by discussing your requirements with the business, for example, when ordering a takeaway.

Food businesses like takeaways, restaurants and cafes have to give people accurate information about the ingredients in their food. If they don't do this their customers could become seriously ill, or even die. Norfolk County Council are running a campaign to help make people more aware about allergens in food.

When you plan to eat out or order a takeaway always check the menu online or call ahead, be clear about your allergy or intolerance.

Food businesses must provide information regarding allergens in the food they provide but are not required to offer an alternative meal if they feel they cannot cater safely for individual requirements.

The Food Standards Agency provides further information regarding allergens and questions to ask when you eat out or order a takeaway

Allergy alerts are issued by the Food Standards Agency where there is incorrect allergen information on food.
