You will need to be on the electoral register in order to vote in any forthcoming elections. The electoral roll lists the names and addresses of everyone who is registered to vote in public elections.
Register to vote or make a change to your details
The service on GOV.UK will let you:
- apply to register to vote
- update your name, address or other details
- opt in or out of the open register
- change your voting preferences
You only need to register once, not for each election.
For any further details on registering to vote you can visit the government website.
There are two versions of the electoral register - the full version and the open register.
The full register
Everyone’s name and address goes on the full version of the electoral register which is only used for:
- elections - such as making sure only eligible people can vote
- preventing and detecting crime, including fraud
- checking applications for loans or credit
- calling people for jury service
The open register
- is an extract of the electoral register that anyone can buy and can be used for anything
- is not used for elections
- your name and address will be included in the open register unless you ask for them to be removed
- removing your details from the open register does not affect your right to vote
You can find out more about the differences between the open register and the electoral register. To opt out of the open register please contact us using the details below.
Registering to vote anonymously
You may be able to register anonymously if you can show that there’s a good reason, for example if you’re concerned about your safety. Your details will not appear on either version of the electoral register if you register anonymously.
