South Norfolk Council has launched a new grant scheme to help residents come together to celebrate the King’s Coronation in May.

His Majesty King Charles III ascended to the throne on the death of his mother, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 8 September last year following her extraordinary 70-year reign.

South Norfolk will be joining communities across the globe to mark the historic Coronation taking place on Saturday 6 May at Westminster Abbey and to commemorate the special occasion, the UK will have an additional Bank Holiday on Monday 8 May.

Town and Parish Councils can apply for the funding if they wish to organise a celebratory event between 6 May and 8 May or if they would like to support a local group or organisation to hold an event during the Coronation Weekend.

Councillor Alison Thomas, South Norfolk Council’s Portfolio Holder for Better Lives, said:

“The coronation of King Charles III is an historic event which will bring communities and people of all ages together to enjoy the celebrations and pageantry as a nation. We are pleased to be able to provide some funding to help our residents enjoy the Coronation Weekend and make memories with their friends, family and neighbours. Whether it's a street party or community gathering, it's sure to be a great weekend we all want to be a part of.”

Anyone considering hosting a community event needs to contact their local Town or Parish Council to request the grant money.

Parish Councils are eligible for a £200 grant and Town Councils can apply for a £300 grant. Applications should be made using the application form on the Council’s website. Payments will be paid in March and April 2023.

Applications will close at noon on Wednesday 29 March 2023.
