Report a lost or stray dog

Animal Warden Services looks after the collection of stray and lost dogs on behalf of Broadland District and South Norfolk Councils. To report a lost or stray dog please contact Animal Warden Services directly. In the event you receive an automated reply because the dog warden is unavailable, please leave a short message including your phone number and they will return your call.

It is a legal requirement for all dogs to be microchipped to help more stray or lost dogs to be reunited with their owners. You must make sure your dog is microchipped by the time it is eight weeks old. We are able to check that dogs are microchipped and if necessary fine owners who have not done this.

It is also a legal requirement that every dog wears a collar and an identity tag in public, bearing the current name and address of the owner.

I have found a stray dog, what should I do?

You should contact Animal Warden Services who will arrange to collect the dog from you as soon as possible. Please note they cannot collect stray dogs wandering free.

If the dog is found outside of either Broadland or South Norfolk areas, please contact the local authority that covers that particular area. Check which local authority you need to contact.

Stray dogs will be checked for microchipping or other identification and the owner will be contacted, provided up-to-date identification details are registered with the Microchip Registration Database.

Following collection, the stray dog will be looked after for seven days and if the owner does not come forward during that time it will be rehomed.

If your dog has been collected, you will be required to pay an initial one off cost, as well as a daily kennel fee and any vet fees incurred before you can be reunited with your dog.

The charges for returning your dog to you are as follows:

If found within the Broadland district:

  • £91.80 including first day in kennels, then £17.90 for each additional day (plus any vet fees incurred)

If found within the South Norfolk district:

  • first occasion* - £46 including first day in kennels, then £11.30 for each additional day (plus any vet fees incurred)
  • second occasion* - £60.30 including first day in kennels, then £11.30 for each additional day (plus any vet fees incurred)
  • third occasion* - £76.90 including first day in kennels, then £11.30 for each additional day (plus any vet fees incurred)

*Based on a 12 month period.
