Dangerous dogs

All dangerous dog enquiries are dealt with by the police, please call 101 (non-emergency number).

All dog owners must keep their dog under control at all times. A dog that shows aggression towards someone may be considered dangerous even if it has not bitten anyone. If a person has reasonable belief that the dog will bite, court action may be taken by the police against the owner under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.

When a dog is dangerously out of control in a public space but it has not injured anyone, the penalty is up to six months in prison, a fine or both. If a dog has injured someone the penalty is increased to a maximum of two years in prison or an unlimited fine.

It is strongly recommended that dog owners make sure their gardens are secure so dogs are unable to get out or make anyone feel threatened.
