Guidance on proms

Are you considering hiring a limousine, luxury or special event vehicle for your child’s prom night? Not all companies that advertise these services are licensed.

Hiring a vehicle and driver that has not been properly vetted and licensed could put your child and their friends at risk. The driver may not have had a disclosure and barring service (DBS) check, or the vehicle may not have passed the councils mechanical test and therefore may not be roadworthy. Unlicensed vehicles and drivers will not be insured.

You can carry out simple checks to make sure that the limousine, luxury or special event vehicle you choose to book is safe and legal. The checks you need to do depend on how many passenger seats the vehicle has.

Checks for vehicles with less than nine seats

Companies providing a limousine, luxury or special event vehicle and driver with fewer than nine seats may require a private hire vehicle operator licence from Broadland District Council.  Ask the company if they are licensed and which local authority licenses them, then contact that authority to confirm.

You can also check to see if they are licensed by contacting the licensing team.

Checks for vehicles with more than nine seats

Companies providing a limousine, luxury or special event vehicle and driver with nine passenger seats or more must have a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) Operator licence, issued by a Traffic Commissioner. If they do not have a licence, they could be operating illegally.

If you wish to report an unlicensed driver, operator or vehicle please contact the licensing team.

Remember, be safe, not sorry.
