Broadland District Council passenger information

Private and executive hire

All private hire vehicles, their drivers and operators are licensed by the council.  Vehicles are subject to age limits and mechanical tests.  Drivers undergo regular checks with the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS), the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and routine medical examinations.

Private hire vehicles

Private hire vehicles can only be booked through a licensed operator.  They cannot wait at taxi ranks and should not be flagged down in the street.

How to recognise a private hire vehicle:

  • All vehicles may display a pre-approved roof sign with the words 'pre-booked only'.
  • The vehicle must display a yellow square plate on the rear (below the windscreen) which shows the plate number, vehicle registration number, vehicle make and model, number of passengers it can carry and the licence expiry date.
  • A yellow internal sticker should be displayed in the top left of the windscreen which provides details of the vehicle.

It is advisable that the price for the journey should be agreed with the private hire operator at the time of making the booking.

Executive private hire

How to recognise an executive private hire vehicle:

  • The vehicle must display a silver rectangular plate on the rear (below the windscreen) which shows the plate number, vehicle registration number, vehicle make and model, number of passengers it can carry and the licence expiry date.
  • A silver internal sticker should be displayed in the top left of the windscreen which provides details of the vehicle.

For your safety, you should only use a licensed vehicle booked via a licensed operator as these drivers will have passed the necessary checks. All drivers should wear their licence badge.
