South Norfolk: Funding on a roll

South Norfolk Councillors have given local projects just under £20,000 through their ward grants, funding a wide range of activities that support the community.

Each of the district’s 45 Councillors has £1,000 of ward funding which they can give to local groups, charities and projects to benefit local people.

The East Anglian Skating Team based at South Norfolk Council’s leisure facility at Framingham Earl has benefitted from £600 of funding from Poringland, Framinghams & Trowse representative Cllr John Overton. The artistic roller dance club meets on Sunday and is open to members of all abilities aged from 5 to 68 years old.

The Club competes nationally and will use the funding to help replace their tired old uniforms, used for competitions.

Anna who manages the Club, said:

“We started the Club in 2021 with just 3 skaters and now have over 50, the support of the ward funding has helped us greatly. It will enable all our skaters to wear new modern outfits and feel part of a team.”

Cllr Overton said:

“They are a very welcoming club, that have grown to be a family with a really friendly inclusive atmosphere. It’s a great sport to get into with lots of health and social benefits and I am delighted to be able to support them.”

Cllr James Easter who represents Bressingham & Burston has used his funding to support Gissing Children’s Centre. He has given £500 towards creating a storm proof semi-permanent shelter.

Manager Linda Nash said:

“We are extremely grateful for the funds from Councillor Easter which enabled us to obtain the shelter and will give us cover in very hot as well as very wet weather - so all year round. We plan to do yoga sessions for the children in the warmer weather, as well as housing sensory trays for exploration, stories and acting things out - a whole host of activities and experiences.”

Councillor for Central Wymondham, Kevin Hurn, gave £250 of his ward funding to the Wymondham and Attleborough Talking Newspaper.

They used the money to purchase five memory stick players, allowing more people to subscribe to the Talking Newspaper’s fortnightly news, information digest and quarterly magazine.

Cllr Hurn said:

“The new equipment will help those with impaired vision to keep up with local news and events, and to feel a greater part of community life. The project will also enable more volunteers to contribute to the service by producing recordings and working in the studio.”
