Special Recognition Award
Maisie Lossau
Maisie Lossau, daughter of Dawn and Darrell Lossau (pictured above), grew up in Spixworth. At 10 years old, she was diagnosed with a brainstem tumour and required surgery that left her quadriplegic and unable to breathe or eat independently. Maisie and her family had to learn how to live a new life together.
Dawn and Darrell set up a Facebook page,
TeamAwesome, to keep their friends and family updated with Maisie’s hospital appointments and progress, little did they know creating this window into Maisie’s life would inspire and encourage people all over the world and in some cases, save lives.
Maisie never lost her wicked sense of humour and showed huge resilience and determination throughout her life. In 2021, she had her tracheostomy removed and was able to breathe by herself. She was also able to achieve a GCSE in maths after just nine months of revision and hard work.
Sadly, after a 7 year battle, Maisie, aged just 17, very unexpectedly passed away on 15 August 2022.
Maisie fought with every ounce of her being. She never moaned or complained and took each day in her stride with the most beautiful smile. Maisie’s story has already encouraged families to check illnesses twice and helped them through their own dark times. Despite all she’d
been through, all Maisie wanted to do was care for and support others.
