Business Growth

Growing businesses are the future of our economy. This award is open to businesses of all sizes, who can show strong, sustainable growth and have a clear plan on how this will be maintained in the future.

Judges are looking to recognise a business that can demonstrate elements of the following:

  • strong financial performance
  • an increased percentage in customer base and/or market share
  • growth in employee numbers and investment in staff such as training and apprenticeships
  • site development or investment in systems, infrastructure, plant or machinery
  • evidence of a robust business plan to support continued growth
  • continued development

Business Innovation

This award is open to businesses, of all sizes, that can showcase new ideas that have been adopted in their business which have had a measurable impact. This will include innovative products or services, environmental or energy savings, IT or automation or the use of an application in a different market.

Judges will look for businesses that can demonstrate:

  • how their idea or application has solved company specific or industry issues.
  • how the idea has been developed and applied to improve financial performance or operational effectiveness.
  • how the idea has created a competitive advantage or led to an increase in market share
  • how the workforce has been involved in or encouraged to generate new business ideas

Business in the Community

This award is open to businesses, of all sizes, that can demonstrate engagement with or contribution to the wider community, for example supporting local groups or projects.

Judges will look for businesses that can demonstrate from one or more of the following:

  • have had a measurable impact on the local community
  • can show evidence of projects, events or programmes that show a not for profit social objective
  • can show evidence that the business considers community interests at its core

Business Resilience

This award recognises those businesses, of all sizes that have reacted to the pandemic and achieved success.

Judges will look for businesses that can demonstrate from one or more of the following:

  • evidence of a flexible business model already in place which enabled them to absorb the impact of the pandemic
  • evidence of an increase in customer numbers
  • accessed funding streams and used these in an innovative way
  • strongly motivated and empowered staff
  • embraced technology in an innovative way

This award is open to any business that is committed to playing a leading role in low carbon transition, through the development of new green products and services and/or by pioneering sustainable business and operating models.

The judges are looking for businesses that have demonstrated how they have enhanced their environmental performance across their operations and promoted the importance of greener business models over the last 18 months. These might include: 

  • taking steps to reduce the environmental impact of your organisation and/or the products and services you provide 
  • evidence detailing your organisation's success over the past 18 months
  • plans to strengthen your sustainability strategy over the next 18 months 
  • what other businesses can learn from your experience

International Business Growth

Exporting increases a business’s market and opens up a wealth of growth opportunities. This award is open businesses of all sizes that have achieved export growth, geographical expansion or an increase in revenue from overseas operations over the last year.

Judges are looking to recognise a business that can demonstrate elements of the following:

  • measurable export growth or increase in revenues from overseas operations and as a contribution to the business as a whole
  • an increase in market share
  • evidence of a robust business plan to support continued growth
  • actively pursuing new international business

This award is open to start-up and new businesses, of all sizes, that have been trading for no more than 18 months from the launch of the campaign on 18 October 2021.

Judges will look to recognise a new local business that has turned an idea into a viable, sustainable business by demonstrating elements of the following:

  • measurable success in their competitive sector
  • consistent growth - which might include turnover, profit, customer base, employees and premises/equipment/machinery

This award is open to tourism businesses that are meeting and exceeding the expectations of visitors. Suitable for all businesses involved in leisure, tourism, events and accommodation who can demonstrate how they are delivering an excellent visitor experience consistently, by focusing on its unique visitor experience.

Judges will look for businesses that can provide:

  • an overview of the business and story so far
  • the businesses ambitions for the future
  • how does the business attracts visitors
  • what the business does to ensure visitors have a positive experience
  • how the business measures and take steps to improve visitor experience

This award honours a person, team or business that have demonstrated an enduring commitment and a collaborative approach in engaging with other businesses.

Judges will look for businesses that can demonstrate some of the following:

  • an engaging story behind the people, team or organisation, why they came together, the identified needs
  • what challenges (both operational and personal) have been faced and how they have been overcome
  • the benefits to the businesses that have been achieved through the collaborative approach
