Personal licence

A personal licence allows an individual to be a designated premises supervisor (DPS) at a licensed premises that sells or supplies alcohol.

Application and guidance notes

Applicants must not be under 18 years of age, and not had a personal licence forfeited within the last 5 years.

You must apply to the local council in the area where you live, not to the council in which the licensed premises is located. Before making your application, check your postcode to see which council you should apply to.

Documents required

The following documents are required with your application:

  1. A criminal conviction certificate or criminal record certificate or the results of a subject access search of the police national computer by the National Intelligence Service. Please note this must be dated within a month of when you submit your application.
  2. A disclosure of convictions and declaration form.
  3. Two photographs of yourself, one of which is endorsed as a true likeness of you by any individual with a professional qualification or person of standing in the community.
  4. The original or a certified copy of your level 2 qualification for personal licence holders
  5. Proof of your right to work in the United Kingdom  A licence will become invalid if the holder ceases to be entitled to live and work in the UK.

Fees

The fee for a personal licence is £37 which you will be required to pay online (via a debt or credit card) at the time of submission.

Processing and timescales

The police and Home Office Immigration Enforcement are notified of any applications and have fourteen days to object. 

If the police or immigration enforcement do not object to the application and the applicant fulfils the criteria, the licence will be granted.
