Accessibility statement for Wymondham AR Trails app

This accessibility statement applies to the Wymondham AR Trails mobile application.

How accessible this mobile application is

We know some parts of this mobile application are not fully accessible:

  • the text can’t be read aloud by VoiceOver, TalkBack and Voice Assistant
  • navigation is difficult when VoiceOver and TalkBack are enabled
  • the app doesn’t support Dynamic Type so text isn’t adjusted to your preferred reading size

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Screen readers can’t identify regions to navigate around the app. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criteria: 1.3.1 Info and Relationships, 1.3.2 Meaningful Sequence, 2.4.3 Focus Order, 2.4.6 Headings and Labels, and 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value. Our supplier Immersive VR have advised this is due to the app’s build on a game engine which is different to standard apps and webpages.

Screen readers can’t read aloud any text content, which fails WCAG 2.1 success criteria 1.4.5 Images of Text, 2.4.6 Headings and Labels, and 4.1.2 Name, Role Value. Our supplier Immersive VR has upscaled the text where possible however, due to the app’s build on a game engine, the content will blur if a user zooms in.

Pre-recorded videos do not have captions, which fails WCAG 2.1 success criteria: 1.1.1 Non-text Content, 1.2.1 Audio-only and Video-only (Prerecorded), 1.2.2 Captions (Prerecorded), 1.2.3 Audio Description or Media Alternative (Prerecorded), and 1.2.5 Audio Description (Prerecorded). We will supply text alternatives as html on our website by 10 April 2022.

Hyperlinks are only identifiable by colour, which fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context). We have worked with our supplier Immersive VR to make the links to websites clearer on the ‘Things to explore’ section. These are now indicated by a button instead of a URL.

Disproportionate burden

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

Maps on the app are not accessible because they are exempt from the accessibility regulations.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We will continue to work with Immersive VR on making this mobile application accessible within the constraints of the game engine it is built on. There is little information and guidance about AR accessibility at the time of writing, including specific AR standards to test against, which has made it difficult to test. We will continue to review the app and will follow best practice for AR accessibility when standards and/or guidance is available.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 1 December 2021. It was last reviewed on 10 January 2022.

This mobile application was last tested on 11 November 2021. The test was carried out manually by Broadland and South Norfolk Councils.

We used this approach to deciding on a sample of pages to test by using accessibility tools on Apple and Android devices.
